sunrise

17th February 2009:

While I`ve been considering the next painting to replace the `ill-fated` Log Tailed Tit watercolour there was an opportunity to see a spectacular sunrise last weekend that unfortunately only lasted a few minutes.
Although the picture here was taken within a series of photographs one September a few years ago, by the time I grabbed my camera and shot out of the house last Saturday the whole light had changed and it lost it`s impact. Nevermind....... again.

Another example of missed opportunities also happened last week on two days off when, to my surprise, I had really good views of a Great Spotted Woodpecker at a feeder when (you guessed it) I didn`t have any camera equipment with me!

This watercolour painting was completed a couple of years ago and remains, at least for the time being, the only image of this bird hanging on the wall in our house.

Disaster strikes ! (L-T-T - RIP)

7th February 2009:

Well this little chap was going to be a very tricky challenge, particularly when coming to the loose feathers Long Tailed Tits have that give them their slightly fluffy look. This watercolour - a long way from reaching that stage - hit a disaster this evening and i`ve decided that it was not recoverable.

I think this is only the third painting that has really hit a point where it couldn`t be redeemed into something I would see as satisfactory, so it is now in with next week`s bin collection! very frustrating! For me that is the challenge of watercolour - it can be quite unforgiving, and occasionally things like this happen. I was really hoping to be able to add it to my collection over the next few weeks, but not now.

Time for a strong cup of tea to put my world back in order .....

the cold snap

The recent snow that has caught South Wales in it`s grip has provided the opportunity of seeing some beautiful scenery, unusual lighting conditions, and shapes that are only temporary until they melt.

Here you have the conflict between an early bud and and sudden piece of snow.
